Efforts to perk up the fading culture in Nigeria, is beginning to gain grounds as groups are combining forces to actualise this feat. One of such groups is A-Town Productions Limited; an innovative entertainment production company in collaboration with Tetrafinesse Creations limited.

Both companies are gearing up for the debut of Sapphire Queen Face of Tradition and Culture – a trademark project and pageant that seeks to showcase Nigeria’s culture and traditional values and heritage.

At its unveiling ceremony and press conference which was crammed full with Nollywood actors and other stakeholders, in Abuja, the Pageant Planner, Jennifer Opara stressed that “Western styles and mannerisms, in alliance with the electronic culture have connived to make us sheath and shelve our beautiful cultural attires, tasty local delicacies and music in our tonal languages,” hence the introduction of Sapphire Queen.

Opera explained that the pageant would also characterise runway fashion show and community development, and her winners would embark on projects within the context of the organisation.

She said: “We hope that through these projects to be embarked on by the winner in her one year reign, our youths can benefit from the initiative and participate in the once-in-a-year pageant.”

“This maiden pageant show is taking place in six zones with centres in Enugu, Calabar, Jalingo, Lagos, Keffi and Kaduna as we expect each participant to audition in her own geopolitical zone. This is the only way we can appropriately assess and select winners from each state,” she added, while explaining how the pageant would be conducted.

According to the organisers, after the auditioning, all 37 finalists representing each state would converge in Abuja for the grand finale scheduled to hold on November 27, 2010 at the ThisDay Dome. The pageant which promises mouth-watering prizes, unlike similar projects, would allow for TV audience participation in deciding alongside the judges winners during the grand finale.

Meanwhile, a representative of A-Town Productions, Mr. Akan Hanson, stressed the need for government and private partnership in revitalising the country’s failing culture.

“As we welcome everyone on board the official flag-off of the biggest and most celebrated traditional and cultural beauty franchise, we hope to use this project to showcase and applaud Nigeria’s aesthetic value system and rich cultural heritage,” he stated.
